This experiment is to test whether organic fertilizer out performs chemical fertilizer or just plain water. The products I am using are DynaGro (chemical), Golden Harvest (organic), and just plain...

Bonnie - I'm guessing that all three plants are receiving nutrients from the potting soil. :( I did a quick google search of the Espoma Organic potting soil (I use a lot of their fertilizers for the...

Hi Louise, What a great idea! Thank you. When I repot them all I'll be sure to take a picture of the root mass to compare that. I'll see what I can find on the bag of potting soil and then post it....

IIRC, it took 3-4 months in a soil without nutrients to show the effects of the water only plant clearly. Long term ftw! And now I want to smell Espoma potting soil.

Bonnie, I'm with Sonority... maybe you can continue this experiment a couple more months and compare the plants again? I'm off to re-read Sonority's journals, too! Barbara

Hi Barbara, I think as long as I have the room I'm going to keep going with this experiment. Intuitively I feel that there has to be a point where the water-only plant begins to lag behind the others....

Here's a photo of the back of the Espoma potting soil bag. I have to confess that it's all Greek to me. I don't know what any of these names and percentages mean. Hopefully someone with some...

Your new potting soil mix?Why does it have dolomite lime?Where did you get it?I've never heard of this organic Espoma brand. It's certainly not sold around here. I'll have to do a little online...

Hi Cheryl, Yes, I've begun using this. I wanted to move to something organic and you know how it goes, try it out on a few plants and then if it's a winner move it to everything. Lindi and Louise were...

The lime makes sense because it is added to adjust the ph of the peat moss. Peat is naturally acidic so the lime is added to neutralize the ph. I'm seeing on the very top of the photo to fertilize...

Yes....that makes sense. I'll look around up here and see if I can find this brand. However, the nurseries and even ACE have gotten rid of most of their 'summer' stock. They're looking forward to...

Had a thought, Bonnie. It has to do with why your plain-water AV budded and bloomed so much sooner than the others. Very puzzling, to be sure, but it reminded me of how commercial growers of...

This is surprising Bonnie. I thought the organic was going to be better as well. The water only violet has pale leaves compared to the other two, so a conclusion could be drawn that it didn't get...
